I’m not sure where to begin, so I’ll just start at the beginning.
I was having a conversation with a friend of mine, Tony Payne, at Aspen Coffee house in Stillwater, OK. I don’t even remember why we decided to meet up and talk, but we did. Our meeting turned into a conversation about my music career’s path. Specifically, we talked about how I was feeling about the progress I had made and what I thought needed to be done in order to continue progressing. I told Tony that I felt okay about the projects I had previously recorded, but I said that I felt like something has always been missing…. I didn’t really know exactly what was missing, but I knew something was.. I continued to talk, and talk, and talk some more… After hearing myself talk out loud, I began to hear a theme develop. No matter what I was talking about, it seemed that I always ended up talking about how I would love the opportunity to record with an established Producer, a Producer who “has been there – done that”, but also a Producer that is current and relevant. I never dreamed that seven weeks later, I would find myself in Hollywood recording in Sunset Sound with Producer Aaron Johnson (The Fray, Secondhand Serenade) and Engineer Warren Huart (The Fray, Augustana, Better Than Ezra), but that is exactly what happened.
At some point in our conversation I had told Tony that if I could work with any Producer in the world, and if money wasn’t an issue – I would want to work with “the Producer of The Fray” – simply because I had always thought that they had a great ‘sound’. From there, Tony went straight to the internet and goggled The Fray, got Aaron’s name, then found a way to contact Aaron’s manager. About one week after Tony sent some of my songs out to BK Entertainment Group, we heard back from Aaron’s manager BK that Aaron would like to talk to me about the possibility of working together.
